How to Change Your Home's Door Locks for Enhanced Security

Upgrading the locks on your doors is a straightforward project that can significantly enhance your home's security. Here’s how you can change your door locks effectively, ensuring your home remains safe and secure.

Step 1: Measure and Purchase the Right Lock

Before you start, measure the existing locks to ensure you buy the correct replacements. Check the diameter of the current lock’s holes and the distance from the edge of the door to the lock's center, commonly referred to as the setback.

Step 2: Remove the Old Lock

Begin by removing the old lock. Start from the interior side of your door, unscrewing and pulling out the doorknobs. This should expose the screws on the latch and deadbolt, which you can also remove.

Step 3: Install the New Latch

With the old lock removed, insert the new latch into the side of the door, ensuring the tapered side faces the direction the door closes. Secure it with the provided screws, ensuring it's snug and correctly aligned.

Step 4: Attach the New Lock

Position the new lock's exterior part through the door, inserting the spindle through the latch mechanism. Attach the interior part of the lock and screw them together. Make sure they're tight and aligned correctly with the door.

Step 5: Test and Adjust

Once installed, test the lock to ensure it operates smoothly. The deadbolt should extend fully into the hole in the door jamb without resistance. If it doesn’t, you may need to adjust the strike plate or enlarge the hole.

Step 6: Consider a Professional for Complex Situations

While most standard lock replacements are manageable DIY projects, older homes or non-standard locks might require professional assistance. If you encounter any complications, such as mismatched lock sizes or unusual door materials, consider hiring a locksmith.

By following these steps, you can confidently secure your home with new locks. For those looking to further their home maintenance skills, why not join our class at the DIY Training Center?
